What Is Robotech Anyway?

The very basics

Robotech is an animated series that premiered in 1985. Simply put, it is the story of an ongoing alien invasion of Earth and delves into the complexity of how humankind would deal with such an unimaginable threat. The series covers 85 episodes that covers three entire generations, also known as The Macross Saga, The Masters, and The New Generation. Robotech was widely heralded as a groundbreaking series for bringing anime to the masses and showing audiences outside of Japan that cartoons could in fact deal intelligently with dramatic concepts such as death, love, and war.

The not so very basics

Before Robotech had set foot outside of Japan, Mainichi Broadcasting of Tokyo had aired three original anime series from 1982 to 1984: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada. By themselves, none of these series were acceptable for broadcast in North America because a minimum of 65 episodes was typically required for syndication at the time. However, all three series were produced by the same legendary anime studio Tatsunoko Productions and a deal was struck in 1985 with Harmony Gold to have producer Carl Macek and a team of staff writers adapt them into one storyline. Because the three original anime series had shared many of the same Japanese animation crew (and in some cases writers), the resulting 85 episode series was remarkably seamless. That end result was Robotech!
